HISTORY AS A SUBJECT MUST NOT DIE IN THE NIGERIA
SECONDARY SCHOOLS BY DANIYAN IBUKUN
Over
the years Government as a subject has slowly began to replace history in the
Nigerian secondary school.
The
Nigerian Government seem be believe that Government as a subject is more
relevant than History. That’s not correct! Government as a subject holds in its
epitome knowledge of systems of governments and their structures.
On
the other hand History as a subject is a critical study of the part and
symbolic events. Another perspective holds it that “History is the study of
change and development in society over time”
Archeology
is a sister subject which bring out the beauty of history both as events and as
a study. These entail finding and dating ornament, fossils molded pieces
aritifact and ancient building, sites. Archeology is quit scientific in
methodology and approach.
History
as a study enable a nation to know and comprehend the past and how it affect
the present probably how it will alter the future of that nation. In other
words History gives a very deep understanding of a people or nation/nations.
Keith
Barton referred to history in 3 visions:
1. Academic discipline 2. Democratic
participation 3. Patriotic Nationalisms
The
study of history is an academic discipline that gives an emens and unlimited
wealth of understanding of the human behaviors and lifestyles.
Also
history triggers patriotism and nationalism in minds of it students and
scholars as well.
History
as its gives deeper understanding its followers i.e students and scholars a
like become democratically inclined by it lessons.
In
these visions the Nigerian Government must re-enstate history as a secondary
school subject. The young minds of the Nigerian youth have to be forged early
enough for the sake of a better Nigerian. History as a school subject will be a
fantastic tool in the hands of the Nigerian Government.
History
as a subject properly used in the hands off the Nigerian government can be an
excellent tool in forging creeds orientation, perception, notion, and mentality.
Therefore
recommend the immediate re-instatement of history as subject in all Nigerian
secondary school.
